Ravustuskausi begins today

The Finnish crayfish season opens at noon on Tuesday, the Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.

The Finnish Central Association for Fisheries and Aquaculture expects a normal catch this year, according to a statement.

Crayfish permits must be obtained from the owner of the water area. In addition, fish conservation fees apply to crayfishers aged 18–69. Those who turned 65 by the end of 2023 are exempt from the fee.

Commercial permits for state-owned waters are issued only in areas where signal crayfish are present. The native noble crayfish has been protected in state waters since last summer.

The season closes at the end of October.
