Poliisi arrests man over fatal stabbing in Helsinki
A man over 50 has been arrested by police in connection with the fatal stabbing of an elderly woman in Helsinki’s Kontula district on Saturday, investigators said.
The victim, aged about 80, was attacked outside the C-entrance of Kontula metro station shortly after 11 a.m. Emergency responders alerted police at 11:25 a.m., and the incident was captured on surveillance footage.
Police said the suspect fled the scene by metro to Mellunmäki and was taken into custody there at 12:36 p.m. Initial questioning indicated the man admitted to the killing, though the motive remains unclear, according to Detective Superintendent Juha Piippo of Helsinki Police.
The knife used in the attack is in police possession. Forensic teams conducted a site examination on Saturday and investigators plan to interview witnesses during the pre-trial investigation.
The suspect is expected to be formally charged early next week.
