Morning frost lingers as temperatures dip to -2°C in northern Finland

Northern Finland recorded sub-zero temperatures early Monday as frost settled across the region overnight.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute reported the lowest reading at -2°C in Tulppio, Savukoski, where the chill persisted into the morning. Savukoski is known for its winter cold records, but summer frosts are less common.

Other locations also saw freezing conditions: Salla church village at -1.5°C, Kittilä’s Pokka at -1.4°C, and Sodankylä’s Vuotso at -1.3°C. Frost warnings remain in effect for the coming nights, with continued risk of ground frost across Lapland.

Tervola farmer Juha Jankkila, who grows puikula potatoes, reported no damage to his crops despite the cold snap. “There was no overnight frost, thankfully. These days they’re rare,” he said. To protect crops, Jankkila monitors forecasts multiple times daily and uses sprinkler irrigation or hessian covers when needed. While recent rains have helped, he noted that more moisture would be beneficial as harvest approaches in a few weeks.
