Police in North Jutland said on Friday that a civilian was found dead after a shooting incident in an industrial area of Nørresundby, near Aalborg. The death occurred despite efforts to subdue the suspect, who was also fatally wounded.
Claus Danø, police inspector for North Jutland Police, told a press briefing that the civilian had already died by the time officers neutralized the suspect during a shootout. The suspect was not struck by police gunfire, Danø said.
Police responded to a report of a fire and possible shooting in the area. Upon arrival, the suspect opened fire on officers, injuring one police officer in the leg. The officer is undergoing surgery and is in stable condition, according to Danø.
The suspect was shot in the neck and is in critical condition. Authorities have not established a motive for the shooting and declined to confirm whether the deceased civilian and the suspect were connected.
Police said the incident appears isolated and does not appear to be gang-related. Investigators are working to determine the sequence of events and underlying causes.
The suspect used a rifle to fire at both civilians and police, Danø said. Authorities have asked anyone in the area who may have been targeted to come forward.
The Independent Police Complaints Authority has launched its own investigation into the shooting, limiting further details from being released.
