Helsinki Garden project sparks debate as citizens weigh in on latest developments

The latest twists in the Helsinki Garden project have drawn sharp public reaction, with even parliament recalled from summer recess to debate the issue next week.

Residents in the Töölö district, where the proposed Garden Arena would be built, shared their views on the controversy surrounding the multi-purpose event venue.

Kaisa Sola, who has followed the project since planning began, said she is interested in how the city will develop but questioned whether the proposed site is truly underutilized.

Peter Kullberg, also closely following the project, said he supports the idea of a better sports hall but called the current debate overblown. He described the project as poorly prepared and said the government’s decision to recall parliament was unnecessary.

“I think it’s overblown, as the leader of the National Coalition Party’s parliamentary group said. Investments have already been budgeted at €4.7 billion, and now we’re talking about €35 million,” Kullberg said.

John Santibanez said he is primarily concerned about Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s public statements, suggesting a possible conflict of interest. He welcomed the scrutiny, noting that funding has not yet been finalized.

Raimo Kesänen called the project fundamentally positive for urban development but suggested the controversy may have been manufactured for political gain. He said he has closely followed the issue through news coverage and the current affairs program *A-studio*.

Isa Aaltonen, who recently returned from Italy, said the debate has dominated Finnish news this week. She expressed interest in how parliament will address the matter and what the opposition will focus on.

Sanna Korhonen, who said she has not followed the project at all, questioned whether now is the right time for such a large investment given Finland’s economic downturn.
