A break-in at Ole Geert Olsen’s home in Havnsø, Vestsjælland, has left him unsettled after thieves ransacked his belongings while he was away in Sweden in late June. His neighbour, who was checking on the house, noticed drawers and cabinet doors left open and immediately contacted Olsen, who then reported the incident to his insurance and the police. Officers confirmed the intruders had forced entry by breaking a window.

Olsen appears to have lost little of value—only a container of instant coffee is missing—though he suspects the thieves were searching for cash or jewellery. Despite the violation, he says he does not feel unsafe but is frustrated by the intrusion. He and his neighbours have since agreed to keep a closer watch on each other’s properties during the holiday period.

His case reflects a broader trend: Denmark saw a 16% increase in reported home burglaries in April, May, and June compared to the same period last year, according to Danmarks Statistik. Police attribute the rise in part to organised and travelling criminal groups, particularly active in North Zealand, who target high-value items like cash, jewellery, and electronics for resale, often abroad.

Security advisor Bent Nikolajsen of Bo Trygt recommends deterring thieves by making homes appear occupied—clearing mail, keeping bins full, and leaving lights on in the evening. Olsen, for his part, now ensures doors are locked even for short errands.
