Finnish police have opened an investigation after former officer Ella Varis appeared on a television programme wearing a decommissioned police uniform from the 1970s, according to documents obtained by Yle.
Varis, known for her social media presence as “Somepoliisi” (Social Media Police), faced five ethical complaints, one administrative grievance, and one internal police review between 2025 and 2026. She has described the complaints as workplace bullying.
The administrative grievance did not result in disciplinary action, as Varis had already resigned. However, the decision noted that her use of gestures and profanity on personal social media accounts did not meet the standards of professional police conduct.
Complaints primarily focused on three issues: leveraging police status for civilian activities, attire, and professional conduct. One report questioned her use of the hashtag #poliisiella (as a police officer) on a personal account, suggesting it blurred the line between official and private profiles.
In September, Southwestern Finland Police received a report about a TikTok video on Varis’s personal account promoting Yle’s Paulin kesäautokilpailu (Paula’s Summer Car Competition). In the video, Varis wore a decommissioned police uniform. The police legal unit determined the action was not illegal and took no further measures.
Police regulations prohibit the use of uniforms resembling official police attire without permission. Exceptions require approval from a police chief, such as for theatrical performances.
