Cyclists in Helsinki continue to veer into the construction zone near Finlandia Hall despite temporary route changes and signage, according to a report by Yle.
The city has rerouted bicycle traffic along Alvar Aallon katu due to renovation work on Karamzininranta, which has forced detours around the Finlandia Hall area. However, many cyclists are still entering the restricted zone, either between the construction site and Finlandia Hall or through the park side of the site—both designated for pedestrians only.
Daniel Helander, the city’s lead communications specialist, acknowledged initial issues with the signage, including some incorrect markers. Adjustments were made this week to improve clarity, but observations on Wednesday showed cyclists still ignoring or missing the directions.
Helander said the city and contractor will review whether further signage improvements are needed. Authorities urge cyclists to follow the designated detour and avoid pedestrian paths for safety reasons, particularly to prevent entry into the park and playground areas.
