Unusual rat surge at Toftavatn

Residents are being urged not to feed ducks at Toftavatn after a sharp rise in the local rat population, according to a notice from Runavík municipality.

The warning is not due to a desire to reduce the duck population, but because the food intended for ducks and other birds is attracting rats. The municipality has confirmed multiple rat sightings since it began tracking reports, with notable activity near the school in Løkin and around Toftavatn, where the rodents are thriving.

Officials note that the rats have little need to seek out poison baits, as they are already finding ample food meant for the birds.
