Faroese fishing group 5 to get five extra fishing days

The Faroese Fishermen’s Association says it is only right to increase the fishing days for group 5 by five, according to a statement from Sniálvur Røvilsberg, a committee member who spoke to KVF on Tuesday.

Røvilsberg, who served on the former fishing days committee from 2007 until it was replaced by new fishing regulations in 2018, sees no reason to cut fishing capacity when catches are good and the market is strong.

He acknowledges that some limits are necessary, but argues the Faroe Marine Research Institute’s data supports giving group 5 more days. He also stressed that the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), which certifies sustainable fisheries, should not dictate how Faroese fishing is organised.
