A 29-year-old man has received an immediate five-month prison sentence after police in southeastern Jutland caught him with items stolen from a church in Vejle, according to the region’s prosecution authority.

South-Eastern Jutland Police received a report just before midnight on Monday from two witnesses who had seen a possible break-in at Sankt Nicolai Kirke. The witnesses provided a description, and officers located the man within an hour, the police said in a statement.

He was found in possession of seven pairs of scissors, an iron cross, a small amount of cash, and a soft drink, Ritzau reports. The man admitted the charges in a court hearing on Tuesday and was convicted of theft from the church, two other burglaries, attempted burglary, and handling a stolen moped.

He accepted the verdict, the prosecution said. The court ordered him detained after sentencing, but he has appealed that decision to the high court.

“A big thank you to the two citizens whose report allowed us to make an arrest within an hour,” said police commissioner Nick Vosgerau.
