Tórshavn municipality will permit denser and taller building in the capital to meet housing targets, the city architect said in a radio interview.

Under the municipality’s 2020 plan, 3,000 homes must be built by 2032. City architect Birita Wardum told KVF’s Oyggjar undir trýsti programme that the municipality is now halfway to that goal but remains undecided on land use policy.

Wardum said the shift allows construction on less land, as plots are already designated. Asked whether denser building risks valuable green spaces, she called it a choice “between pest and cholera”: either build more compactly within the city or take more undeveloped land.
