A child under 15 died on Saturday after jumping from a diving platform at Kempele’s Kalliomonttu swimming area, prompting the municipality to close the tower indefinitely, Yle reports.

A second fatality occurred at the same site in June last year when an adult man drowned after jumping from the platform. These are two of at least three diving-platform-related drownings at Finnish beaches since summer 2017, according to Konsta Kulmala, senior inspector at the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes). The third took place in Kuopio in 2017, when a 17-year-old died after a night-time jump; a warning system was later installed at that tower.

Kempele’s sports services manager Eero Kauppi said the tower has been temporarily closed following the latest incident. He noted that the water can feel extremely hard on impact from a 6–7 metre height, and swimming ability may not prevent injury. The platform has no adjacent ladders or structures for climbers to exit the water; swimmers must reach steep stairs after jumping.

Lifeguards are present at the beach only on weekdays. The diving platform and cliffs are located on the opposite side of the pond from the main swimming area.

Anne Hiltunen, water safety expert at the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation, said diving from platforms is generally safe but requires swimming proficiency and proper entry technique to avoid injury. She added that municipal diving sites are typically inspected by divers and maintained, making them safer than informal jumping spots like bridges.

Kauppi said the municipality is reviewing safety measures and may consider round-the-clock supervision. Future swimming operations will relocate to the under-construction Zeniitti tourism area, where safety will be addressed differently.
