The share of Faroe Islands residents holding a permanent residency permit has fallen to its lowest recorded level, with 93.7 percent of the population meeting the requirement as of 1 June, according to figures from the Faroese statistics agency Hagstovan.

At the same time, the number of residents without a permit has risen steadily, reaching 3,016 on 1 June this year, up from 1,756 on the same date in 2021. Most of those without permits are from Asia.

A Faroese residency permit is granted to those who have lived in the islands for half their life or for 10 consecutive years at some point.
