The 25th Swamp Soccer World Championships in Hyrynsalmi this weekend saw teams prioritise flair both on and off the pitch, reports Yle.

Debutants Mansen huikkapojat, a Tampere-based side, arrived with custom orange-and-blue kits, branded beer, and a dedicated team bus. The bus, purchased years ago for group travel, was refurbished with large team logos for the event.

“When you leave Pirkanmaa, you’ve got to make an entrance,” said goalkeeper Pekka Helminen. The team also ran an active social media presence, posting player profiles, schedules, and results in colours matching their branding.

Swamp soccer is known for its unpredictable conditions. Fields vary, and even within a single pitch, players may find themselves knee-deep in one moment and on dry ground the next. “In the first match we were in deep, then the next we were on the surface,” said Heikki Aho. Rasmus Ruusunen added: “At times we were wading up to our necks.”

The tournament, now in its 25th year, drew 128 teams—a typical turnout, according to organiser Emilia Lehtinen. Despite the sport’s rowdy reputation, she noted few cancellations: “I don’t know if it’s discipline or what, but we don’t get many dropouts.”

Mansen huikkapojat, formed after a Tammerfest discussion last year, set their sights on the world title. Though they fell short, they finished fourth in the men’s amateur division and scored more goals than their partners had in past years. The team’s general manager, Jari Takaluoma, confirmed the post-match celebrations would continue in Hyrynsalmi, with players swapping kits for blue jackets and shorts.
