Helsinki police are investigating Friday evening’s accident at Linnanmäki amusement park as a possible case of assault causing bodily harm, though no suspect has been identified at this stage.

“We are determining whether someone acted negligently, which would justify suspicion of assault. It may also turn out, as the investigation progresses, that it was an accident. All options remain open,” said duty investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Toni Uusikivi.

The incident occurred when the hands of a child under school age were caught under a heavy electrical cabinet door. The child was taken for further medical treatment.

Uusikivi said the exact sequence of events is not yet known. The investigation is in its early stages, with surveillance footage being reviewed and contact established with those involved and potential witnesses.

The site was cordoned off after the incident using the park’s own safety barriers but was reopened by 10 am Saturday after repairs.

Linnanmäki management declined to comment on the specifics but expressed regret. “I cannot comment on an individual customer’s case at this stage. We are clarifying what happened in cooperation with the authorities,” said Niina Häkkinen, head of amusement park services.

Police were notified of the incident at around 8 pm Friday and arrived to investigate the circumstances.
