A flag raised during the opening of a new waste management facility in Hoyvík will be reused and planted in a designated area as part of an environmental restoration effort, marking the first such initiative in the Faroe Islands, according to Bárður Johannesen, project manager for Tórshavn Municipality.
Johannesen noted that the area set aside for the flag’s reuse is part of a broader attempt to restore land affected by the facility’s construction. “A significant amount of land will be damaged, and we are trying to restore it,” he said.
The experiment is part of efforts to preserve heather and other vegetation in the vicinity of the new waste site.
