Six months after stepping down as mayors, several former Danish municipal leaders have transitioned into new professional roles, reports DR.

Mikael Smed, the former Social Democrat mayor of Vordingborg Municipality, has returned to his previous career as a police officer after eight years in office. He described the shift as both exciting and challenging, noting the absence of strategic responsibilities but also the difficulty of no longer being involved in decision-making.

Carsten Rasmussen, another Social Democrat and former mayor of Næstved Municipality for nearly 15 years, has resumed work in the municipality’s Parks and Roads department, where he was employed before becoming mayor. He said he has enjoyed returning to outdoor work and physical activity after years of office-based duties.

Karina Vincentz, former mayor of Odsherred Municipality representing the local list Nyt Odsherred, now works as a development consultant for LOF, which operates evening schools. She admitted struggling with the loss of constant responsibility but has appreciated the opportunity to sleep longer, take more time off, and spend time with family. Friends have told her she seems happier, which she finds thought-provoking.

Roger Buch, a municipal researcher at the Danish School of Media and Journalism, noted that the transition can be profound, as former mayors often shift from working 60-80 hours a week with extensive support to a more independent and less demanding role.
