The only public restaurant in Espoo’s archipelago has opened on Iso Vasikkasaari island, operated by musician brothers Leo and Hugo Stillman.

The Stillmans, who previously ran restaurant boats in Helsinki, have restored the over century-old yellow villa and plan to add a sauna, live music, and accommodation if permitted. Their sister, Saga Stillman, serves as the restaurant manager, while chefs Joni Nyberg and Timo Gren are co-owners.

Espoo city councillors Jussi Holma (National Coalition Party) and Päivi Puntila (Swedish People’s Party) say the archipelago has significant untapped potential for tourism and needs more services for boaters and visitors. They note Espoo has lagged behind Helsinki in developing recreational use of its islands.

The restaurant, Gula Villan, operates under a 10-year lease with the city. Supplies are transported by a dedicated vessel and carts, with the first summer focused on establishing operations. The Stillmans aim to extend the season with autumn crayfish parties and pre-Christmas events, and have considered offering winter activities like ice floating with an airboat.
