Concerns rise over caterpillar sightings in Denmark

Residents in Denmark have been sending photos of caterpillars to local authorities, fearing the arrival of the highly allergenic oak processionary moth larva, known colloquially as the “larva from hell,” national broadcaster DR reports.
The larva’s hairs can cause severe skin rashes, eye irritation, and respiratory issues. However, according to Karin Winther, a nature guide in Vesthimmerlands Municipality, none of the submitted images have depicted the oak processionary moth. The caterpillars in the photos were identified as harmless yponomeuta moth larvae, found in various bushes rather than oak trees, where the oak processionary moth typically resides.
Winther noted growing public anxiety over the potential spread of the oak processionary moth to new regions, including Vesthimmerland. She emphasized the need for adaptation, stating that the species, like many others, may eventually appear in the area.
Her comments follow a proposal by Venstre party MP Amanda Heitmann for Odense Municipality to fell oak trees as a preventive measure against the larva. Winther criticized such approaches, arguing that society’s distance from nature fuels fear-based decisions. Instead, she advocated for supporting natural predators, such as birds, to help control pest populations.
“We know far too little about nature,” Winther said, urging greater ecological awareness and proactive habitat support.
