Demand for TBE vaccines has risen sharply in Finland this year, with private providers ordering 50% more doses than in 2025, according to national health data reported by Yle.

The increase follows a record number of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) cases early in 2026 and growing public awareness. The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) recorded nearly 180,000 TBE vaccine doses administered so far this year, compared to just over 192,000 for all of 2025. Actual figures are higher, as not all private-sector vaccinations appear in the registry.

Eight new regions were added to the national vaccination program in 2026, offering free TBE shots in high-risk areas. Demand has surged particularly in North Savo and Oulu, while growth in Southwest Finland has been steadier.

Despite the uptake, many fail to complete the full three-dose series. A 2022 survey by Pfizer found only 36% of those who started the TBE vaccine finished all three shots, with even fewer taking booster doses. THL recommends the first booster three years after the third dose.

The TBE vaccine protects against tick-borne encephalitis but not Lyme disease, which is more common and treatable with antibiotics.
