Faroese environmental agency Firum must improve its monitoring of seal populations, researcher Kirstin Eliasen said, after a local resident reported finding seal carcasses in Skálavík over the weekend.

Eliasen, who is leading a project to study the impact of aquaculture on seals, told KVF that public trust in seal population data is low, even when the figures appear accurate.

The incident follows broader concerns about Firum’s staffing levels and its ability to conduct thorough research.
