The Faroese government will examine whether residents can legally obtain nicotine liquid for e-cigarettes, according to Health Minister Eyðdis Hartmann Niclasen.

Nicotine is classified as a pharmaceutical substance in the Faroe Islands, meaning only the national pharmacy monopoly, Apoteksverkið, is permitted to import it. A recent legal change has ended the previous practice of individuals importing nicotine liquid for personal use.

Niclasen confirmed that the Health and Social Affairs Ministry received an inquiry from the national pharmacist in January regarding whether nicotine liquid for e-cigarettes should be classified as a pharmaceutical or a consumer product. The ministry is reviewing the matter and will respond after the summer recess.

Opposition MP Ben Arabo questioned the minister on how the new restrictions affect access to nicotine liquid.
