Danish municipalities struggling with infestations of the oak processionary moth caterpillar—dubbed “the larva from hell”—will receive increased support from national authorities, according to a joint statement from the Ministry of Nature and Animal Welfare.

Christian Rabjerg Madsen (S), Minister for Nature and Animal Welfare, called the spread of the pest a serious issue and confirmed that relevant agencies had been instructed to assist affected municipalities immediately. The effort involves coordination with the Ministry of Health and Ecclesiastical Affairs and the Ministry of the Environment.

The caterpillars have caused significant disruptions in Odense, where multiple playgrounds and a kindergarten were closed after children developed rashes and itching—a known reaction to contact with the larvae. A recycling station also shut temporarily, and authorities advised against using certain sidewalks and bike paths.

Health Minister Ida Auken (S) stated that her ministry would provide guidance to municipalities and ensure clear health-related communication. The Environmental Protection Agency will additionally share expertise with local governments and businesses.

Officials acknowledge the caterpillars cannot be eradicated but aim to limit their spread. Protests were held in Odense on Saturday over the municipality’s handling of the issue. Authorities plan to review long-term strategies after the summer break.
