Significant glacial flood impacts Skálm River near Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland

A significant glacial flood occurred on Saturday from Mýrdalsjökull into the Skálm River, but it largely went unnoticed by the media and public. The flood took 90 minutes to reach Route One.

Photos showed the eastern end of the bridge over Skálm, which was located just east of Vík í Mýrdal. The river breached the roadway, creating a gap of nearly fifty meters between the bridge and the road, which likely spared the bridge from damage.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office did not raise immediate alarm over the potential for a large flood in the Skálm River. The flood event was just over an hour and a half from the glacier’s snout to the bridge. Matthew James Roberts, head of the service and research department, acknowledged their concerns about the possibility of a disaster flood from the outset and noted efforts to analyze real-time data from the area.

Early that Saturday morning, the Meteorological Office announced on its website that increased electrical conductivity was detected in the rivers around Mýrdalsjökull, prompting outreach to civil protection authorities. A weather expert indicated in a radio report that this was an annual event, suggesting it was a minor flood. Nevertheless, it later reached one of the largest flood levels since the 1918 eruption of Katla.

Despite the risks, a report on the Road Administration’s website indicated that a large volume of water surged over the bridge, raising concerns that it could fail; fortunately, it endured. There’s a clear need for continuous monitoring and data collection near the glacier’s snout to manage such unpredictable natural events effectively.
