The Faroese Union of Secondary School Teachers has warned that artificial intelligence is a direct threat to democracy, as it undermines memory and critical thinking.
Maria Chun Nielsdóttir, the union’s chair, told Faroese broadcaster KVF that AI has had a major impact on secondary education and sparked debate among teachers. She cited research from MIT indicating AI affects memory, does not promote creativity or success, and reduces critical thinking.
“AI goes beyond memory and critical sense, and it is a democratic problem when critical sense is under threat,” Nielsdóttir said.
