Finland’s state forest agency Metsähallitus will introduce paid parking at five popular hiking destinations this late summer as part of a closely monitored trial, Yle reports.
The scheme covers Kolin national park’s upper car park, Kiilopää and Riisitunturi in Urho Kekkonen national park, Saukkovaara in Korouoma, and three parking areas in Sipoonkorpi. Charges will be collected via a mobile app once signage and payment instructions are in place.
Metsähallitus may halt the trial at any or all sites if it proves unworkable or public reaction turns strongly negative, according to customer relations director Elias Haapakorva. The agency has prepared for mixed feedback and is ready to act quickly if responses are overwhelmingly negative.
Revenue will fund maintenance of hiking sites. The agency will also study whether the fees change visitor behaviour, such as shifting to other locations or accepting parking charges as part of outdoor activities.
Metsähallitus encourages visitors to use carpooling or public transport where possible. A bus service to Seitseminen national park, not included in the trial, was introduced a few years ago.
