A light earthquake struck near Bergen on Thursday evening, shaking buildings and prompting reports from residents across the area, according to local media.
Witnesses described a deep rumbling just before 18:30, with noticeable tremors felt in central Bergen. Ellen Hvidsten, a visitor staying in an apartment in the city, told Dagbladet she had never experienced anything like it. Her son later confirmed online that it was an earthquake. “It shook quite a bit, but nothing fell off the walls,” she said.
Android’s earthquake alert system initially recorded the quake at 18:12 near the northern tip of Askøy, estimating a magnitude of 4.0. Mathilde Sørensen, a professor at the University of Bergen’s Department of Earth Science, later told Bergensavisen that preliminary data placed the epicentre about 10 kilometres west of Øygarden, slightly west of Turøy, with a magnitude of approximately 3.2. She noted that figures may be revised as more data is collected.
Norsar, the Norwegian seismic monitoring agency, reported receiving multiple accounts from the region but had not yet confirmed the event as an earthquake by 18:30.
