Nato to open battalion headquarters in Haderslev in 2029
Nato will establish a new battalion headquarters in the Danish town of Haderslev in 2029, a move that has drawn mixed reactions from local residents, Danish broadcaster DR reports.
Some, like Flemming Holm, express concern that the facility could attract unwanted attention. “Unpredictable people might consider attacking or sabotaging something. I think it’s a bit too close for comfort,” he said.
Rasmus Nielsen shares the unease, warning that the town could become a target. “They’ll go after the great powers first, and Nato is a great power. So I think we could become a target in some way.” He also fears potential cyberattacks in the future.
Others welcome the development. Jens Jørgensen believes it will bring jobs and vitality to the area. “If they want a headquarters here, we should support it 100 percent,” he said. Charlotte Wohlert agrees, arguing it will put Haderslev on the global map. “It’s great that they’ve chosen to place it here,” she said.
Defence Academy lecturer Peter Viggo Jakobsen downplays the security risks, noting that soldiers have long been stationed in Haderslev due to its barracks. “If there’s one thing this unit can do, it’s protect its systems—that’s its purpose,” he said. He adds that residents need not worry in their daily lives, though they may notice “some different voices in town.”
The headquarters will be responsible for securing communication and data networks between Nato’s northern units when it opens in 2029.
