Tampere tests paid floor accommodation as hotels fill up

Tampere is testing paid floor accommodation for the first time in August as a surge of major events fills the city’s hotels to capacity, even limiting ticket sales for some gatherings.

August is packed with festivals, three near-sold-out stadium concerts by Eppu Normaali, housing fairs, and the Kuninkuusravit trotting races. Demand peaks on the second weekend of the month, 7–9 August, when 94% of the city’s accommodation is booked, according to Booking.com. Major chains like Scandic, Sokos, and Lapland report no availability unless cancellations occur.

Remaining options are mostly short-term rental apartments, with some charging over €1,000 for two nights. Desperate visitors have taken to social media to seek cheaper alternatives.

In response, Finland Events is offering 600 floor spaces in the largest hall of Tampere’s exhibition and sports centre for €244.50 per person for one or two nights, including two breakfasts. Guests must bring their own sleeping bag and mat. Event director Susanna Nipuli said the price aligns with floor accommodation at other Finnish festivals, such as Ruisrock in Turku, where school lodging cost €30 per night without breakfast.

Nipuli denied that the high price reflects the city’s hotel shortage, noting that the same space will offer floor accommodation for €10 per night during the Kotae Expo in November, without breakfast.

Jami Haajanen of Loud’n Live Promotions, organiser of the Tampere City Festival, said the lack of accommodation is now restricting ticket sales. With 25,000 of 40,000 tickets sold, he reported exploring all options to transport attendees, including additional VR train services between Tampere and Helsinki and extra city buses. “We’re trying floor accommodation because the city’s capacity is exhausted, and what remains is extremely expensive,” he said.

Visit Tampere CEO Jari Ahjoharju called the month exceptional, with an unusually high number of events alongside established draws like Blockfest.
