Rytterknægten tower regains its viewing platform
The observation tower on Rytterknægten, Bornholm’s highest point, has reopened with a new steel viewing platform after three years without one.
The historic granite tower, Kongemindet, built in 1856, now features a newly installed 360-degree platform with staircases, replacing the old, deteriorated structure. Senior project manager Lennert Jørgensen of JD Stål, the Amager-based firm behind the work, confirmed the installation of the five-section steel structure was completed on schedule, with final touches added over the weekend.
“It’s been an unusual level of attention for a project,” Jørgensen said, noting the complexity of the design, which includes separate staircases for ascent and descent. Despite his experience with major projects like bridges, the metro, and the Royal Theatre, he described this as a uniquely challenging task.
Elna Kjøller of Destination Bornholm said the tower’s restoration marks the return of a cultural landmark. “For decades, it’s been a natural destination for locals and tourists alike. Standing 184 meters above sea level, visitors can once again see across the entire island, even as far as Christiansø.”
