A local citizens’ network will stage a demonstration outside Odense City Hall on Saturday to protest the handling of a toxic caterpillar outbreak in the city, according to a report by DR.

The oak processionary moth caterpillar, known colloquially as the “larva from hell,” has caused rashes and itching among residents, prompting Odense Municipality to advise against using certain sidewalks and bike paths, including Lindved Åstien, Tornbjergstien, and Kohavestien.

Alexander Boe, the initiative’s organizer, told Fyens Stiftstidende that the demonstration aims to show authorities that residents’ concerns are serious. He criticized the lack of a “clear overview” and a “plan for what we do from here.” A Facebook group for the protest has gathered over 850 members in a day.

Fyn Police confirmed to Ritzau that the demonstration was initially registered for a shared area near Blangstedgård in southeastern Odense but has since been moved to Odense City Hall.

The caterpillar’s microscopic hairs can trigger allergic reactions in humans and animals. Earlier, B.T. reported that Ørbækparken daycare in Odense temporarily closed after children developed rashes and itching, with operations relocated to a Vollsmose facility while the infestation is addressed.

On Tuesday, Nature and Animal Welfare Minister Christian Rabjerg Madsen (S) called for a coordinated effort against the caterpillar, instructing his ministry to involve relevant agencies, including the Danish Nature Agency, the Health Authority, the Environmental Protection Agency, and KL (Local Government Denmark).
