A Tampere district court has sentenced a rental agent to two years in prison for aggravated embezzlement after he diverted tenants’ security deposits to his own accounts, misappropriating nearly €460,000 over two years.

The man, who operated as a rental intermediary, transferred deposits paid by more than 200 tenants and landlords to his personal use between 2019 and 2021, using the funds to cover his own debts and taxes. He has admitted to the offences.

When tenancy agreements ended, the agent failed to return the deposits, leaving landlords liable to reimburse tenants out of their own funds. His company was declared bankrupt in 2021.

The court ruled that he had exploited his position of trust and the long-term nature of rental contracts, which allowed the misuse to go undetected for an extended period. He was also handed a five-year business ban. The verdict is not yet final.
