A donation of 250,000 kroner from Sportsgoodfonden will help revitalise Christiansø Naturvidenskabelige Feltstation, the organisation announced, according to Danish broadcaster DR.
The station, based in Møllehuset on the southern part of Christiansø, monitors and researches the unique birdlife of Ertholmene, including the Græsholm reserve, home to Denmark’s most important breeding site for razorbills and guillemots.
Since 1976, the station has ringed and tracked birds, with data used to follow migratory and breeding populations. State funding ended years ago, leaving the work dependent on membership fees and grants.
The new funds cannot cover the ringers’ salaries but will strengthen the association’s finances and sustainability. Plans include improved member recruitment, outreach, and selling branded merchandise to generate additional income.
Station chair Hans Ole Mathiesen said the donation was a major boost after years of financial strain. With nearly 1,800 Facebook followers, even a fraction becoming paying members could significantly support operations.
