The University of Helsinki Student Union (HYY) was forced to sell prized properties, including the iconic Old and New Student Houses, after failed real estate investments, Yle reports. Yet the university’s student nations continue to own more than 1,000 student flats across the capital.

HYY’s subsidiary Ylva sold the Domus Academica C and D buildings in the city centre in May, offloading over 200 student apartments. The buyer, a serviced-apartment operator specialising in student housing, has pledged to keep the units for student use.

Student nations—cross-disciplinary student associations with regional roots—retain their property through foundation structures and cautious investment. The Hämäläis-Osakunta’s affiliated Hämäläisten Ylioppilassäätiö alone holds around 400 flats, including a newly completed block in Oulunkylä co-owned by several other nations’ foundations.

Other major holders include the Pohjalaisten Talosäätiö Ostrobotnia, which manages roughly 300 apartments for the Northern and Southern Ostrobothnian and Vasa nations. The Satakunta, Viipuri, Varsinais-Suomi, and Central Finland nations also maintain smaller portfolios, while some, like the Eteläsuomalainen Osakunta, own no property at all.

Beyond housing, the nations’ most visible assets are their historic buildings, now Helsinki landmarks: Nylands Nation’s “Nylle,” the Ostrobotnia House (“Botta”), and Hämäläis-Osakunta’s “Hämis,” home to the legendary Tavastia Club.
