The Faroese government plans to first strengthen penalties for violent crimes, Prime Minister Beinir Johannesen said in response to a parliamentary question from MP Fía Selma Nielsen.

Nielsen asked whether the government had plans to toughen penalties for crimes against children. Johannesen confirmed that after addressing violent crimes, authorities will review whether penalties for other offences—particularly sexual offences—are proportionate.

The government also intends to examine reforms introduced by neighbouring countries. When revising penalties for sexual offences, the process will involve consultation with relevant parties, including the police, to ensure a balanced and proportionate penalty system, Johannesen stated.
