The German shipyard company Meyer Werft, which has faced significant financial difficulties, is restructuring its organization, as reported by North Germany’s public broadcaster NDR. The Meyer Group intends to establish a new parent company that will integrate the Papenburg-based Meyer Werft with the Rostock-based Neptun Werft. Neptun has been part of the Meyer Group since 1994.
This new parent company, Meyer Neptun GmbH, will also oversee four smaller subsidiaries, including companies specialized in cabin production and ship painting. Current employment contracts will transfer to this new entity.
According to the Meyer Group, the newly formed parent company will be in a stronger financial position than the individual companies standing alone. All assets previously on the subsidiary companies’ balance sheets will be consolidated into Meyer Neptun’s assets. This more robust balance sheet is expected to provide greater confidence to the banks financing Meyer’s subsidiaries.
Additionally, the company’s headquarters will be relocated; Meyer Werft’s main office will move from Luxembourg to Papenburg, where Meyer Werft is located. NDR notes that this arrangement serves as a concession to the Lower Saxony state, aiming to secure government support for the shipyard amid its financial challenges. Last week, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz hinted at the possibility of state assistance for Meyer Werft during a press conference.
As of now, these restructuring efforts are not anticipated to affect Meyer Turku. Turun Sanomat was the first to report this news from Finland.
