Tórshavn Municipality’s plan to convert a purchased building in the capital’s eastern district into an afterschool facility has stalled, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The municipality bought the property in Geil Street for 10.5 million kroner in April, intending to renovate it for use as an afterschool centre. A municipal assessment found the building would require extensive modifications, with estimated renovation and expansion costs exceeding 20 million kroner—bringing the total projected expenditure to around 32 million kroner.

For comparison, constructing a new 650-square-metre afterschool facility for 130 children in the area would cost approximately 29 million kroner, based on the recent completion of a similar facility in Kollafjørður.

Johan Syderbø, head of the municipality’s building department, confirmed that no renovation work has been tendered and no bids have been received. No updated structural assessment or cost estimate has been prepared, and he stated it is too early to say when the building might be ready for use.

A working group is tasked with developing a building plan outlining the facility’s future operations and necessary modifications, but Syderbø said this work has not yet begun.
