As political and social news slows during the summer, animal stories rise to dominate Finnish headlines, according to a report by Yle.

A recent case involves a David’s deer that escaped from a wildlife park in Kitee last week. The rare deer, originally from China and extinct in the wild, bolted after being startled by a wild bear, said park director Kalle Keskimäki.

Other notable cases include the Hamina walrus, which drew national attention in 2022 after appearing in the wrong habitat. The walrus, likely from the Arctic, was one of Finland’s most Googled topics that year. Despite rescue efforts, it died during transport, with exhaustion and stress cited as likely causes. Its remains were preserved at the Finnish Museum of Natural History.

In 2024, an aggressive heifer named Unssi escaped from a farm in Ranua, prompting safety concerns. Before authorities could act, a bear killed it. Another heifer, Vilukas, made headlines in 2025 after returning to its farm in Rovaniemi with a newborn calf, half a year after disappearing.

In 2022, a rare wild cat, initially thought to be a serval, was spotted in Joensuu. Later identified as a savannah cat, its fate remains unconfirmed.
