Tórshavn municipality is recruiting a head chef to oversee the Faroe Islands’ largest school meal initiative, aiming to provide free lunches to all public school students in the capital, Kringvarp Føroya reports.
The role will involve planning and preparing healthy meals, with research showing that nutritious school lunches improve children’s well-being, academic performance, and reduce health inequalities, according to Annita á Fríðriksmørk, chair of the municipality’s welfare committee.
A policy document for the programme has been drafted, drawing on similar schemes in Klaksvík, Tvøroyri, Aarhus, and Reykjavík. The municipality has also assessed local needs and parental willingness to pay.
