First live fish arrive at Svínoy hatchery

A new live fish hatchery operated by Bakkafrost in Svínoy received its first 2,000 fish this week, the Faroese broadcaster KVF reports.

The facility aims to increase roe production and expand operations across multiple sites, according to Rúni Olsen, Bakkafrost’s land-based farming division manager.

Located remotely and using seawater, the Svínoy hatchery is isolated from other farming activities, reducing the risk of disease, Olsen said.

Live fish at the site are used to strip eggs for fertilization, with the resulting roe supplied to smolt hatcheries for further production.
