Danish beaches are packed as a heatwave coincides with the first day of the season for TrygFonden’s coastal lifeguards, DR reports.

From this morning, lifeguards are stationed in towers at 34 beaches and harbours nationwide, monitoring swimmers daily from 10:00 to 18:00. The hot weather means they will be busy from the start.

Anders Myrhøj, TrygFonden’s head of coastal lifeguards, said the team will watch for more than just water safety. “We’re increasingly focused on crowding on the beaches, as well as cases of heat exhaustion and minor injuries. We also deal with lost children.”

He expects the first weekend to be particularly hectic. “We might get to touch the sand first on Friday, but once school lets out in the afternoon, things will pick up.”

Myrhøj urged beachgoers to look out for one another, especially those with young children. He added that lifeguards will serve as a resource for heat advice, such as bringing extra water, seeking shade, and approaching them if feeling unwell. “We’ll make sure to cool you down.”
