Oslo installs sidewalk e-scooter ban in Vålerenga

Oslo has installed 62 new signs banning e-scooters from sidewalks in the Vålerenga district, Dagbladet reports.

Transport Councillor Marit Vea (V) said the move aims to curb reckless riding and improve pedestrian safety, citing a doubling of e-scooter injuries in 2025 compared to 2023.

Local residents welcomed the restriction. Margrethe Rudjord, 40, called it a “very good measure,” noting the danger posed by fast-moving scooters near schools. Pushkin Hama, 37, said e-scooters “have no business on the sidewalk,” though he doubted the signs would deter all offenders.

The city plans to expand the ban to other areas, including Løren and the city center. Police will enforce the rule, with violations carrying a 1,950 NOK fine.
