A veterinarian has advised dog owners on how to care for their pets as high temperatures pose risks to animals, Danish broadcaster DR reports.

Andreas Egelund, a veterinarian at AniCura Holbæk Animal Hospital, recommends limiting physical activity, especially for energetic dogs that may not self-regulate. Walks should be scheduled for early morning or late evening to avoid peak heat.

Owners should watch for signs of overheating, such as rapid, shallow breathing, restlessness, or bright red gums. In severe cases, dogs may collapse. Egelund stresses immediate cooling and veterinary contact if heatstroke is suspected.

Cooling a dog’s paws is one of the most effective ways to lower body temperature, as dogs primarily release heat through their paws. A shallow basin of water can help.

Leaving dogs in parked cars is strongly discouraged, even with windows open, as temperatures inside can rise dangerously fast. Egelund also emphasizes providing constant access to water and shade for all pets.
