A beach volleyball court has been constructed in the centre of Herning on Kousgaards Plads ahead of Sunday’s Danish Championships, part of the city’s DM Week, DR reports.
Excavators and lorries arrived on the asphalt Thursday afternoon, filling a marked frame with 180 tonnes of sand. The grains, sized between 0.2 and 2.0 millimetres, form a 10–15 centimetre layer, matching standards used on the international Pro Beach Tour, according to Mathæus Backmann of Volleyball Denmark.
With a heatwave forecast for the weekend, organisers are considering measures to prevent the sand from becoming too hot. On the Pro Beach Tour, water is sprayed on courts before matches and during breaks. Backmann said players are prepared to compete regardless.
The court will be dismantled immediately after the final match at 20:00 on Sunday, with the sand and boards transported to the Danish Sports Federation’s headquarters in Brøndby. Removal is expected to take as long as the initial installation.
