A whale became entangled in fishing gear and buoys at Nappstraumen in Lofoten on Tuesday, rendering it unable to move properly. The Directorate of Fisheries required time to coordinate a rescue operation, which could not commence on the day of the incident. Consequently, the Directorate and the Coast Guard collaborated on Wednesday to free the whale.
By 12:30 PM on Wednesday, officials confirmed the ongoing rescue efforts and noted that while the operation was progressing smoothly, the whale was extremely fatigued. Experts assessed that the whale was in such poor condition that euthanasia was considered necessary. Although reports indicated that the decision had been made to euthanize the whale, it had not yet been carried out as the necessary equipment was being arranged.
Erling Øksenvåg, speaking to NRK, explained that they lacked the proper equipment to handle the situation safely, emphasizing that conventional weapons cannot be used for this large creature, which could cause significant harm even with minor movements. The focus had been on safely cutting away the entanglements.
Biologist Heike Vester from Ocean Sounds expressed concern about the delay in launching the rescue operation, stating that it took too long and that prompt action was critical for the whale’s survival.
As the situation developed, the team has been prioritizing the safety and well-being of both the whale and the rescuers involved.
