A 6-year-old boy died after being struck by a car while cycling in a residential area in Kvernaland, Time municipality, on Wednesday afternoon, Dagbladet reports.

Emergency services responded quickly, and medical personnel performed CPR at the scene. The boy was transported to Stavanger University Hospital but was declared dead shortly after arrival, according to police prosecutor Stian Eskeland.

The boy’s family has been notified. The driver, a man in his 40s, has been charged under Section 281 of the Penal Code for negligent homicide. He has not been detained.

“He has been charged, and a defence lawyer will be appointed for him at a later stage,” Eskeland told Dagbladet.

Police currently have no indication of a prior relationship between the boy and the driver. The man provided an initial statement at the scene. Authorities have seized his vehicle, mobile phone, and driver’s licence. A blood test was conducted to rule out impairment, though Eskeland stated there was no immediate sign of intoxication.

Investigators are in the early stages of the probe, with multiple hypotheses under consideration. Technical examinations and witness interviews, including with the driver, are ongoing. Police forensic technicians and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s accident investigation team worked at the scene for several hours before concluding their on-site work.

“We are very early in the investigation and do not yet know the sequence of events,” Eskeland said.
