Traffic data from BarentsWatch indicates that the tanker ship “Vladimir Rusanov” has been operating along the pipeline leading to the Nyhamna facility in Aukra, which processes gas from the Ormen Lange field. Hanne Olafsen from the Norwegian Defence Operations Headquarters stated that the military is closely monitoring the situation in the region. However, she withheld specific details about military operations and the activities of other vessels.

Earlier this week, the ship experienced engine trouble and has been navigating along the coast of Western Norway on its way to Murmansk. As of Wednesday, it continues its journey northward. The vessel drew attention for being near a military radar site in Måløy, Vestland county. Silje Berger, an environmental preparedness officer at the Norwegian Coastal Administration, confirmed that they routinely maintain contact with vessels that stop unexpectedly. This procedure aims to provide timely assistance if needed and to prevent dangerous situations.

Berger noted that it is not uncommon for ships to halt for minor repairs or other reasons, resulting in various such incidents throughout the year, though not all attract significant attention. The unusual aspect in this case may be related to the ship’s Russian origin and its slow movement along the Norwegian coast. Currently, the “Vladimir Rusanov” is operating under its own power, but the Coastal Administration will continue to monitor the situation until the vessel leaves Norwegian waters.

This follows a similar incident in July, when the Russian icebreaker “Nikolay Chiker” was reported off the coast of Sunnmøre, sparking speculation about the presence of the Russian submarine “Kazan” in the area.
