Two Nigerian women, Norah Nuakego Orji and Daniel Opia Queen, received certificates on Tuesday for completing the first level of Faroese as a second language, reports Faroese broadcaster KVF.

The pair, who have lived in the Faroe Islands for two to three years, described the course as challenging, demanding, and stressful but expressed pride in their achievement. Both have now chosen to settle permanently in the Faroe Islands and emphasised their responsibility to learn the language.

Vivian Begerau, who teaches Faroese to immigrants, stressed the importance of language proficiency for integration. “If you don’t understand the language, you feel excluded,” she said, noting a growing demand for Faroese language instruction among immigrants—and a corresponding need for more qualified teachers.

“There is incredible interest, and to teach so many students, we naturally also need more teachers. I hope more will train as instructors,” Begerau added.
