Many students at driving schools across the country are eagerly awaiting their driving licenses, facing significant delays for practical driving tests. The wait times to secure a test with certified examiners have drawn criticism from various parties. Janne Jensen, who failed her practical driving test in June, is now bracing herself for a new attempt after a two-month wait in Hillerød. Jensen expresses concern over the long duration, noting that it cultivates uncertainty and increases the risk of failure.
The Danish Road Traffic Authority indicates fluctuating pass rates, revealing that in June, nearly 40% of candidates were required to reattempt their tests, with the figure reaching around 50% in Copenhagen. Bent Grue, chair of the Danish Driving Instructor Union, emphasizes that current waiting periods are unprecedented, often stretching up to eight weeks in cities like Copenhagen and North Zealand. Though the transport minister, Thomas Danielsen, announced several initiatives in 2023 aimed at rectifying the situation, Grue claims that conditions have only worsened.
Emilio Stenbæk, a driving instructor, highlights how these extended wait times increase students’ costs, as many are compelled to purchase additional driving lessons to maintain their skills while they wait. Jensen, a student herself, shares her frustrations over the financial burden of these extra lessons, stressing the unfairness of having to spend money due to the insufficient number of driving tests available.
Minister Danielsen acknowledges the excessive wait times, asserting that initiatives introduced in July should alleviate the issue. He underlines the need for driving instructors to better prepare students to reduce failure rates. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to address the prolonged waiting times in regions like Copenhagen and North Zealand.
